Evren Sungur (1980, Istanbul) studied Architecture at Yeditepe University and Sculpture at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University.
Sungur, who mainly focuses on human in his painting, defines his conceptual framework as questioning the nature, evolution, existence and civilization of human beings. Depending on these elements, he is inspired by the behavioral characteristics of human beings, the dual character between reason and instincts, male-female relations that determine the social order, intergenerational competition and cultural/political past. The poetic phenomenon in Sungur’s paintings arises from the tragedy of the instinctive behaviors and reflexes of his figures, in contrast to their own evolution, the civilization they created, and finally their existence.
What makes Sungur’s works unique in his field is that he brings together all the compositional tools of art with a unique unshakable harmony by forcing each of them indiscriminately. He defines civilization by identifying this harmony, which he captures with time, space, form and color, with history, architecture, sculpture and painting. If the the viewer is disturbed by this civilization he describes, it is because the artist underestimates it.
