Cody Choi was born in Korea in the early 1960s when the country was still recovering its traumatic experience of the war and extreme economic poverty. Growing up with the social turmoil of Korean modernisation and witnessing the rapid growth of the country until the 1980s, Choi opted to move to the US. Living and working in the US as an Asian artist, Choi had to confront and struggle with the Western discourse and its biased notion of Asian cultural identity. Choi represented Korea in Venice Biennale in 2017. He currently lives and works between Seoul and New York and is a major figure in the contemporary art world.
